Brownes Dairy introduced a modern version home delivery model, fashioned from the age-old Milkman delivery service (‘Milko’ in Aussie slang). Milko is a purely digital sales channel, allowing Brownes to sell direct to consumers via an online store, and deliver directly to their doorsteps within 24 hours.
Milko launched at 10pm on a Tuesday night with a Facebook post (reaching over 600,000) and within one hour were inundated with orders well exceeding their capacity. Brownes planned to launch with one van, but this quickly turned into 10 trucks on launch day. Due to the phenomenal demand, their entire team was put on a weekly Milko roster, preventing any COVID-19 redundancies in the team. In three months, Milko delivered over 12,000 orders.
Hundreds of families rely on it each week to get their dairy products and the Milko service is on track to be a $1M business within one year. Despite lockdowns mostly being lifted in WA and major retailers’ home delivery recommencing, they are still delivering to over 120 homes a day and are growing. By popular demand, Milko is here to stay.
