2018 Innovation Name: Deakin Genie
Awards: 33rd Most Innovative Company
Deakin Genie is a ground-breaking response to persistent problems of student on-boarding, information overload, disengagement from generic, impersonal teaching and learning, and attrition. It was inspired by global trends in AI-enabled assistive technologies and research indicating virtual agents can be as effective as human tutors in achieving effective learning outcomes.
Deakin Genie is a smart, personalised digital assistant, which runs on a student’s phone as a voice-enabled app, helping them to get organised with their university studies, and prompting them with important reminders about their course and life at Deakin. Genie shows and tells students where to find information, when and how to action tasks, and where to find help. Just like an assistant IRL, Genie gives students a daily briefing, showing them their timetable, assignment due-dates and exam dates, what they need to study and by when. It even motivates students over time, keeping them happy and on-track!
